On 8 November 2017, online news agency Tb24.ge published an article entitled “The European Union has weakened, this is the beginning of the end“, which discusses the meeting between President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili and his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda. Tb24.ge claims, that during a joint press conference the Polish President refuted Georgia’s aspirations to join the EU.

Tb24.ge: “The President of Poland poured cold water over the Georgian head of State and indirectly refused Georgia’s membership of the EU.”

The aforementioned statement is disinformation and has no correlation with actual facts, as the President of Poland Andrzej Duda openly asserted the exact opposite during the press conference held by the two Presidents of Poland and of Georgia, when he insisted that the EU must be prepared to accept new members in its ranks.

At a joint news conference held by the Georgian and Polish Presidents on November 8, 2017, Polish President Andrzej Duda emphasized the importance of new members for the EU. According to him, the EU has to leave an open door for new members. He said that the EU should be prepared to welcome new members.

Andrzej Duda, President of Poland: “Today, it is in the interest of Poland, and not only Poland, but also, I believe, in the interest of the whole Europe, primarily the European Union, to keep the door to the EU open. The EU should show it is prepared to prospectively welcome new members that want in, that declare their ambition to join the Union after having met the accession criteria”

The statement is available at the official page of the President of Poland.
