An online program live streamed by Facebook page Alt-Info on September 2 mainly focused on the issue of Russian funding of the Alliance of Patriots party. Shota Martinenko, the host of Alt-Info, said that pro-western political parties of Georgia are financed from abroad and European Georgia and other parties are financed by the Open Society Georgia Foundation (so called Soros Foundation).

Alt-Info’s claim as if Georgia’s political parties are financed by the Open Society Georgia Foundation is disinformation. According to its internal politics, the Foundation never finances political parties or the campaigns supporting/opposing these parties. Further, an online grant application form notes that a project should not envisage any activities in support of a political party/individual.

To verify the information, Myth Detector reached out to the Open Society Georgia Foundation. Its representative clarified that according to the Foundation’s mandate and procedures, it never finances a political party or the campaign supporting/opposing this particular party.

According to Anti-Western Propaganda 2019, the report released by Media Development Foundation (MDF), anti-Soros messages were actively spread in 2019, like in previous years. Dominating messages were that Soros meddled in Georgia’s internal affairs. Calls were made for banning the Soros Foundation as well as restricting and controlling foreign-funded NGOs. George Soros has long been accused of financing and organizing various protests in the United States and beyond. In various conspiracy theories, he is accused of stirring destabilization in Europe and is considered to be the major source of financing color revolutions and civic protests in post-Soviet space (Georgia, Ukraine and Armenia).
