On October 3, Ermile Nemsadze and Sandro Lobzhanidze, members of an ultra-nationalist movement, Georgian March, released a post referring to Times.com.ua about the threats coming from Soros and his Foundation in Georgia. As an illustration, they added a quote to the post:

“Europe will win even if no ashes remain out of Ukraine. Nobody cares about the Ukrainians’ existence. They should themselves take care of their own welfare.”

Nemsadze and Lobzhanidze claimed that these words allegedly belonged to George Soros. On October 4, the same quotation was shared by Facebook pages “აზიმუტი” and “სტალინი”. Ermile Nemsadze’s Facebook post was later published by news agency geotimes.ge.

Times.com.ua, quoted by Ermile Nemsadze, refers to replyua.net. The latter notes in its article that German magazine Cicero has interviewed George Soros.

The quotes that were attributed by the Georgian March members and pro-Russian Facebook pages to George Soros actually belong to Alexander Zapolskis, political commentator of a pro-Kremlin media outlet. In the article published by regnum.ru, Zapolskis presented his own interpretation of the Soros interview with German magazine Cicero in 2014.

  • The spread quotation belongs not to George Soros, but rather to political commentator, Alexander Zapolskis.

On November 22, 2014, news agency regnum.ru released an article by Alexander Zapolskis headlined “Soros: EU should drag Ukraine into war – otherwise Ukraine will bury EU.” Zapolskis cited German magazine Cicero’s interview with Soros, which actually does not contain any such comments, as the source of quotation. In the article, Alexander Zapolskis voices his own assessments and expectations about the role of the West in Russian-Ukrainian conflict. In his opinion, in order for Europe to maintain the global economic leadership, Ukraine should fight for a long time; the author supposes that nobody cares for Ukrainians’ fate. Europe will only win if Ukraine is razed to the ground – Russia will have to restore Ukraine, because it is part of Russia rather than Europe.

The analytical article by Zapolskis represents his own interpretation of the interview with Soros as well as assessments based on this interpretation that was later attributed by pro-Kremlin media outlets to George Soros and spread virally. As a result, Zapolskis’ interpretation using the name of George Soros was spread by Russian sources and then picked up by Ukrainian and further Georgian media outlets.

  •  Interview with George Soros in German magazine Cicero

In the interview with German magazine Cicero in October 2014, George Soros said that Russia’s attack on Ukraine indirectly means an attack on entire Europe, calling on the West to provide financial support to Ukraine.

“The European Union should finally understand that Russia’s attack on Ukraine indirectly means an attack on entire Europe… No one in the West has an interest in the war with Russia. Therefore, we should spare no efforts to financially help Ukraine,” Soros said.

The interview with George Soros does not contain any claims that Ukraine will bury Europe if the European Union does not help it. It fully represents an interpretation made by Alexander Zapolskis.

  • Soros vision about the Ukrainian issue

In June 2015, a website jewishbusinessnews.com released recommendations and winning strategy for Ukraine by George Soros. According to him, sanctions on Russia are not enough and they must be coupled with a political commitment by Ukraine’s allies to do whatever it takes to enable the country not only to survive, but to succeed in implementing far-reaching political and economic reforms, because enabling the Ukrainian economy to flourish would benefit both Ukraine and Europe.

George Soros also noted that if Ukraine prospers while Russia declines, no amount of propaganda will be able to conceal that Putin’s policies are to blame. If European leaders treat Ukraine as another Greece, it will be a mistake, as Ukraine is undergoing a revolutionary transformation. According to him, by defending itself, Ukraine is also defending the EU. If Putin succeeds in destabilizing Ukraine, he may then apply the same tactics to divide the EU and win over some of its member states, Soros noted.
