4 April, 2018

On March 31, a web portal Geowebs.ru repeated fake news disseminated a year ago and released an article titled “A Georgian man was beaten to death in Turkey several minutes ago. Do you know who he is? I am shocked…”

Geowebs.ru is a website, which was registered on the Russian domain two months ago and tries to increase its readership with the help of clickbaits. Similar websites use clickbait headlines and fake news to get as many clicks as possible. The website has been registered for a period of one year, which, according to Scamadviser, follows the pattern used by many fraudulent and fake selling websites.

The Myth Detector checked the article and its accompanying image last October, right upon its dissemination, and ascertained that:

  1. The primary source of disinformation was Levan Khidisheli, a Georgian man affiliated with the Georgian March movement, who posted a photo on his Facebook page on October 28, 2017 depicting a man, who as he claimed, was a Georgian citizen beaten to death just for stealing a jacket in Turkey. The post had a xenophobic hashtag “Turkey is our enemy.”
  2. Later the image went viral in several media outlets, but the Facebook user deleted it from his page.
  3. The administration of Berlin Hotel located at Zeynep Kamil Street in Istanbul shown in the photo told the Myth Detector that the photo actually depicts not a Georgian citizen, but a Turkish national, who jumped from the 3rd floor of Ozsa Hotel located on the same street. The news report was also rejected by the Turkish Embassy to Georgia.
