On June 6, 2019, Davit Tarkhan-Mouravi, the Leader of the Alliance of Patriots of Georgia, stated on air at TV Obiektivi that no shops in the center of Batumi are owned by Georgians and that everything there belongs to the citizens of Turkey. Tarkhan-Mouravi also added that the Government of Georgia allegedly gave up Adjara.

To verify the statement by Davit Tarkhan-Mouravi, Myth Detector investigated one of the central streets of Batumi and the commercial real estate there. On Konstantine Gamsakhurdia street, located opposite to the main entrance of the boulevard, 92% belongs to Georgian individuals, while 76.1% belongs to Georgian legal entities and the state.

Out of 20 commercial real estate objects on Konstantine Gamsakhurdia street, there are nine food facilities, one hotel, eight shops (clothing, accessories, sweets, toys), one pharmacy, and one microfinance organization. In total, the buildings are owned by 236 individuals and 21 legal entities

In 2017, Batumelebi edition inquired about the owners of commercial real estate on Kutaisi street, in Batumi. Kutaisi street is especially targeted with anti-Turkish and xenophobic messages due to the belief that “this street has been bought by Turks” and that there are no Georgian facilities left on the street.

According to Batumelebi, only five Turkish citizens own real estate on Kutaisi street – a total of 280 square meters. According to the official data by the Public Register of Georgia, all of the owners of real estate on this street, except for these 280 square meters, are citizens of Georgia and none of them are ethnically Turkish.

Myth Detector verified the myth that the writings on facilities on Kutaisi street are only in Turkish or Arabic. We offer you several photos. In addition, several publications are available on this link.
